Next Generation DNA Sequencing Diagnoses Fungal Etiology in Chronic Respiratory Disease, Clinical Response Supports Clinical Validity

A 71-year white male presented to pulmonologists with progressively worsening respiratory problems a chronic productive cough, asthma symptoms and malaise. The patient was subjected the traditional treatment of antibiotics, cough suppressants, inhaled bronchodilator corticosteroids. After multiple failed combinations inhalers, had sputum sample, which analyzed by special stains targeted Next Generation DNA Sequencing (NGS). Fungal eukaryotic (18S) NGS identified ‘best match’, Candidae parapsilosis C. viswanathii an organism in Glomerulaceae family, Funnelformis mosseae. prescribed antifungal tandem antibiotic, Terbinafine Doxycycline. rapidly improved his baseline. This communication communicates potential microbial sequencing pathogen identification pulmonary disease clinical outcome.
